Battersea Regeneration

The opening of Hotel Verta coincides with the regeneration of the Thames riverfront. As part of the London Heliport complex, Hotel Verta is leading this investment in the fast-changing metropolitan skyline. Hotel Verta will be unveiled to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the heliport - London’s only commercial heliport. With the forthcoming Olympic Games, the heliport’s profile is set to be raised dramatically.

Timeline

1858
Battersea Park was opened introducing 200 acres of green space in Battersea. Formally known as Battersea Fields, the park was designed to provide space and beauty for healthy exercise and pleasure. It was intended to encourage moral conduct and a respect for, and pride in, Britain and the Empire. It is situated on the south bank of the River Thames opposite Chelsea.

1951
The Festival of Britain was a celebration of British science, history and culture. Festivities in and around Battersea Park helped to boost morale during the post war years of austerity. The Pleasure Gardens at Battersea Park, opened from May 3rd until the end of October 1951 to present ‘the lighter side of The Festival of Britain’ held in the South Bank. The Fun fair regenerated Battersea social life.

1955
The fourth and last chimney was added to the Battersea Power Station. On completion, it became the largest brick building in Europe. Alongside the famous Battersea Dogs home, it is one of the best known landmarks in London.

1959
Battersea Heliport originally started life back in 1959 when planning permission was obtained from central government to construct a platform over the Thames in Lombard Road. It became the only CAA licensed heliport serving the city of London. This remains the position today.

1965
In 1965 London local government was re-organised, forming larger authorities. Battersea and Wandsworth were combined to form the new London Borough of Wandsworth.

1979
The Morgan Crucible factory close to the Hotel Verta site is demolished to make way for development along the Thames

2007
The heliport site was acquired by von Essen hotels with PremiAir being awarded the exclusive contract to operate the heliport. The acquisition deal also included the exclusive luxury hotel development.

2009/2010
Hotel Verta opens alongside The London Heliport coinciding with the 50th anniversary of The London Heliport.
